Abstract
En las sociedades de hoy sin otro horizonte temporal que el presente, la arquitectura sigue guardando la memoria. Es la tesis de esta investigaciĂłn que sostiene el aĂșn vigente papel simbĂłlico de la arquitectura centrada en los monumentos modernos. Estos monumentos y memoriales-museos con una funciĂłn integrada, se dedican por lo general a los acontecimientos violentos en el transcurso del Ășltimo siglo: Guerras Mundiales y Guerras Civiles, Holocausto, totalitarismos y terrorismo. El objetivo principal de la tesis es analizar la arquitectura memorial, sus fundamentos conceptuales y sus lenguajes, su interacciĂłn con los individuos y su impacto social. A travĂ©s de algunos ejemplos seleccionados por su popularidad, impacto mediĂĄtico y debate suscitado en el marco de la teorĂa y la crĂtica arquitectĂłnica se ha tratado de desarrollar un anĂĄlisis multifocal apoyado bĂĄsicamente en una bibliografĂa que abarca campos de la sociologĂa y la antropologĂa, en particular los estudios de la memoria, la historia y la historia del arte y temas relacionados con la percepciĂłn y la comunicaciĂłn. En definitiva, el mĂ©todo del trabajo es interpretativo y a travĂ©s del anĂĄlisis arquitectĂłnico-espacial como eje se vinculan diferentes factores que convierten la interpretaciĂłn de la arquitectura memorial en un sistema complejo. La tesis se estructura en cuatro capĂtulos que tratan los mismos ejemplos, desde diferentes ĂĄngulos. El primer capĂtulo estudia el papel simbĂłlico y representativo de la arquitectura memorial enfocando la construcciĂłn de la memoria social y el papel de esta arquitectura en la instituciĂłn de los âlugares de memoriaâ como espacios pĂșblicos. En el segundo capĂtulo se categorizan las formas de la objetivaciĂłn de la memoria intersubjetiva en el espacio y cĂłmo la memoria y en particular la memoria de los acontecimientos traumĂĄticos del pasado se articula con la construcciĂłn socio-espacial de la ciudad y el paisaje. En el tercer capĂtulo se estudian los rituales de la conmemoraciĂłn y del duelo pĂșblico en estos espacios y cĂłmo se les confiere sacralidad. En el cuarto capĂtulo se estudia mĂĄs allĂĄ del determinismo social de estos espacios, la implicaciĂłn del cuerpo y de las emociones en la construcciĂłn de la memoria socio-espacial. En definitiva, en la tesis se trata de interpretar el papel cultural de estos nuevos monumentos en las sociedades de hoy heterogĂ©neas y pluriculturales y cĂłmo se integra esta memoria cultural en la construcciĂłn societaria. La nueva perspectiva que aporta la investigaciĂłn se basa en la sĂntesis de las diferentes perspectivas entre las cuales falta, como se ha podido comprobar, la perspectiva espacial, tanto en el anĂĄlisis sociolĂłgico y antropolĂłgico como en el anĂĄlisis psicolĂłgico y filosĂłfico. AquĂ el anĂĄlisis arquitectĂłnico, en el contexto contemporĂĄneo, adopta un enfoque complejo que abarca la relaciĂłn de la arquitectura memorial con la sociedad de hoy, su percepciĂłn, interpretaciĂłn, aceptaciĂłn y apropiaciĂłn. ----------ABSTRACT---------- In the present-limited temporal horizon of todayâs societies, architecture still maintains the memory. It is the thesis of this research, that asserts the validity of the symbolical character of architecture, with a focus on the modern monuments. These modern monuments and memorialmuseums are predominantly centred on the violent episodes of the last century: World Wars and Civil Wars, the Holocaust, totalitarianism and terrorism. The main objective of this thesis is analysing the memorial architecture, its conceptual foundations and language, its interaction with the individuals and its social impact. The purpose of this research â through the examination of some case studies that were selected for their popularity, media impact and the debate that they arose within the architectural theory and criticism framework â is to develop a multifocal analysis. This analysis is essentially based on a bibliography that encompasses the fields of Sociology and Anthropology, particularly Memory Studies, History and Art History and issues related to perception and communication. Concisely, the work method is interpretive and, through architectural and spatial analysis, it links different factors that make the interpretation of memorial architecture a complex system. The thesis is divided into four chapters that approach the same case studies from different angles. The first chapter studies the symbolical and representative role of memorial architecture, focusing on the construction of social memory and the part that this particular type of architecture plays in institutionalizing the âsites of memoryâ as public spaces. The second chapter categorizes the forms in which the intersubjective memory is objectified in space, while also studying how memory, particularly the memory of past traumatic events, articulates with the socio-spatial construction of the city and the landscape. The third chapter studies the commemoration rituals and public mourning in these spaces and the ways in which they are offered a sense of sacredness. The fourth chapter focuses on the implications of the body and the emotions in the socio-spatial construction of the memory, beyond the social determinism. Ultimately, this thesis is about interpreting the cultural role of these new monuments in todayâs heterogeneous and multicultural societies and how this cultural memory is integrated into the societal construction. The new perspective provided by this research is based on the synthesis of the different perspectives, which, as proven in both sociological and anthropological analysis, as well as in the psychological and philosophical ones, lack a spatial approach. In this study, the architectural analysis, in a contemporary context, adopts a complex approach that encompasses the relationship between todayâs society and memorial architecture, its perception, interpretation, acceptance and appropriation.
